Willowmere

Elk River  ·  Clendenin, West Virginia  ·  Est. 1890

Fog on the water until nine, most mornings.

Forty acres, one road in

A barn, a meadow, and a mile of river that nobody else is using that day.

Willowmere books sixteen dates a year. That's not scarcity for its own sake — it's how long it takes to mow, set, host and put a place like this back together properly. When you book, the farm is yours from Friday noon until Sunday noon, and there is no second wedding happening across the field.

Summer

The meadow is knee-high and the river is warm enough that somebody's cousin will end up in it before the night is out. Long light until nine. We mow ceremony aisles into the tall grass the morning of, so the shape of your day is literally cut into the field.

The barn

Chestnut posts, an open truss ceiling and doors at both ends that we throw wide when the evening cools. Heated and lit, with a proper catering kitchen tucked behind the north wall. This is the rain plan and it is not a compromise.

The meadow

Eleven acres sloping toward the water, with the ridge behind it. We mow the aisle and the seating footprint the morning of your ceremony, so it's crisp and it's exactly where you want it. The cedar arbour stays up year-round and is yours to dress however you like.

The riverbank

Flat water, a gravel bar you can walk out onto, and willows that were here long before the barn was. Most couples do first looks or the last twenty minutes of light down here. There's a path wide enough for a wheelchair the whole way from the barn.

The farmhouse

Four bedrooms, two baths, and a wraparound porch that catches the morning. Most people use it as the getting-ready house and then somebody's parents end up staying the night. It's included — we're not going to charge you for a building that's already sitting here.

How a day runs

Nothing here is fixed — this is just what most weekends look like, so you can see the shape of it. Your planner will move all of it around and we'll keep up.

  1. The gate opens

Rentals arrive, the farmhouse is yours, and we walk the grounds together one last time. Rehearsal dinner in the barn or by the river, your call.

  2. We mow the aisle

Literally. Ceremony footprint gets cut fresh that morning so the lines are sharp in the photographs.

  3. Hair and makeup, upstairs

Two bedrooms have good north light and enough outlets, which sounds unromantic and is the thing every stylist asks about first.

  4. Ceremony in the meadow

Guests park on the upper field and a shuttle runs the two hundred yards down for anyone who'd rather ride.

  5. Cocktails at the river

While we flip the meadow or open the barn, depending on the sky. Either way it takes forty minutes and nobody watches it happen.

  6. Music down, fire up

Amplified sound ends at 10:30 by county ordinance. The fire ring runs until midnight and that's usually the part people remember.

  7. Everything out

Take your time. Coffee's on in the farmhouse and there's no one waiting on the space behind you.
